Every casino bonus comes wrapped in a Terms and Conditions document. The good ones are 8 to 15 paragraphs. The bad ones are 30+. Length is not the signal. What matters is the order in which five specific clauses appear, and how each one is phrased.
I read every T&C end to end before any deposit I make for these reviews. The process takes me about three minutes per document because I look in the same places, in the same order, every time. Here it is.
1. Where the wagering multiplier applies
Read this clause first. Wagering at 35× on bonus alone is fine. Wagering at 35× on deposit-plus-bonus combined doubles your required play. If a casino writes 'on bonus' you owe 35 × bonus_amount. If they write 'on deposit and bonus' you owe 35 × (deposit + bonus). The same headline 35× becomes a very different commitment.
2. The max-bet cap
Almost every bonus restricts your bet size while wagering is active. The standard is €5 per spin or per hand. Anything below €3 is hostile because it means you can't clear the wagering at any reasonable pace. €0.50 caps exist and they are designed to make sure you give up before you finish.
Check the cap, multiply by your wagering volume (35 × €100 bonus = €3,500 of required play at €5 per spin = 700 spins minimum). If the cap is €0.50, that 700-spin floor becomes 7,000. Plan accordingly or skip the bonus.
3. Game weighting
Different games contribute different percentages toward your wagering total. Slots usually count 100%. Table games might count 10%. Live dealer often counts 5%. Some bonuses exclude specific games entirely — typically the highest-RTP slots and any progressive jackpots.
The trap: a bonus that excludes every game with an RTP above 96%. You can still play, but every spin advances your wagering count more slowly because you're forced into lower-RTP machines. Watch for an excluded-games list at the bottom of the T&Cs. If it's longer than ten games, the bonus is structurally hostile.
4. Time limit on the wagering
Most bonuses give you 30 days to clear the wagering. Some give 14. A handful give 7. A 7-day window combined with a €0.50 max-bet cap is mathematically equivalent to a forfeit.
If you genuinely want to clear the bonus, calculate before you accept: required wagering ÷ max bet ÷ days ÷ hours-per-day-you-can-actually-play. If the answer is more than 100 spins per hour, the time limit is the trap.
5. Maximum withdrawal cap on bonus winnings
This one is buried. Some bonuses cap what you can withdraw from bonus play at 5× the bonus amount or a flat figure like €500. You can clear the wagering, win €2,000, and only be able to cash out €500 of it because of this clause.
Look for the phrase 'maximum withdrawal' or 'cap on winnings derived from bonus funds'. If it's there at all, factor it into whether the bonus is worth the time.
A worked example
A casino offers €500 welcome bonus, 35× wagering. Sounds great. Read the T&Cs:
- Wagering: on deposit + bonus combined (red flag #1)
- Max bet during wagering: €3 (red flag #2)
- Game weighting: slots 100% except 47 listed slots which count 50% — the listed slots include every popular Pragmatic Play and Big Time Gaming title (red flag #3)
- Time limit: 21 days
- Max withdrawal: 5× bonus = €2,500 cap
Required play: 35 × (€500 deposit + €500 bonus) = €35,000 of wagering. At €3 max bet, that's 11,667 spins. Across 21 days, that's 555 spins per day, every day. The bonus is technically clearable but only if you play 90 minutes of slots daily for three weeks and don't touch the 47 excluded games.
I'd skip this bonus. The 200% First Deposit advertising headline isn't lying — but the structure designs you to fail before you finish.
The shortcut for everyday play
If you don't want to do the math, the shortcut: no-wager bonuses (real ones — read the T&Cs to confirm) and 20-25× on bonus-alone are the only consistently honest welcome structures. Everything else needs the worked example before you click claim.
